Obituary: SHORT, Samuel Henry

Samuel Henry Short, who died recently in Grafton, had lived all his life on the Clarence. He was born at Lower Southgate in 1884. Farming had been his vocation and he gained wide respect for his proficiency, chiefly through being very practical and realising that hard work was the only way to success.

His property at Lower Southgate was selected by his father, who in 1855 came from the Hunter Valley. A family of seven girls and two boys were reared on the property. The only brother and four sisters died before Sam Short.

Sam Short married Elsie Foggo in 1910. She was also a resident of the lower river. Deceased acknowledged he owed much of his success to his wife. He never recovered completely from the shock of her death soon after their retirement.

During his years at Lower Southgate, Sam Short combined with his farming pursuits a full public life. Besides being on the Church committee, and a good worker in that field, various other organisations had the benefit of his support and experience. As secretary to the local Parents and Citizens Association, a position he held for about 40 years, he played an important part in keeping the school functioning on a very high plane.

He was a capable director of the Grafton Co-operative Dairy Co. for many years. His long association with the industry gave him a clear insight on the need of co-operation in marketing and producer control. To these aims he was devoted.

Sam Short was associated also with the C.P. and A. Society, Pastures Protection Board and Clarence River Co-operative Meat Co. Each benefited from his level-headedness and business knowledge.

As a judge of livestock and a breeder of cattle and horses, he was well known. He exhibited at local shows for many years and gained considerable success.

Sam Short was a man amongst men and his passing will be felt deeply by all who knew him.

He is survived by two daughters
